Sarah Killam of Bide Studio has transformed her home into a warm organic abode. The renovation, completed just days before Sarah’s baby boy arrived, remarkably changed the space into a serene and thoughtfully designed haven. The photos, taken by Yanglin Cai, convey the significance of designing for a life well-lived: from a cozy nursery outfitted in stripes to a centerpiece kitchen clad in marble, each frame captures a room created with heartfelt intention and meticulous detail.
From the photographer… Photographing Sarah of Bide Studio’s personal home was such a meaningful experience for me. Sarah and her family resided in the home for a few years prior to its transformative remodel. I was amazed to learn that Sarah decided to tackle the renovation during her pregnancy and it wrapped just several days before her sweet baby boy arrived – a decision definitely not for the faint-of-heart but one that yielded the most stunning spaces for the family.
We spent time all throughout the house capturing the warm living spaces downstairs, the primary bedroom and bath, and of course, the darling nursery for baby Jack. For most of the day, we were under a heavy blanket of storm clouds but we leaned into the the moodiness with the soft, natural light as well as supplementing with artificial light to showcase striking materials and design in spaces such as the kitchen. By the time we were shooting the living room, it was a torrential downpour outside which concluded with a lovely, though all-too-brief, golden hour.
The house was chock-full of wonderful moments that I was eager to capture during our visit. It was the one of many highlights to shoot the primary bath and the kitchen – each harmonious in their use of natural materials and serene palettes. The spaces were further refined by Sarah’s delicate styling – every object had a sense of place. Moreover, these areas probably underwent most jaw-dropping changes compared to their original layouts.
This home is full of intention and a clear labor of love. It will undoubtedly remain a special place for Sarah’s family in the years to come.
