This 10,000+ sqft new build feels anything but brand new. Dana Clemons, of Clemons Design Co., integrated myriad traditional elements into this modern home to create the air of an intimate and established home. Ali Harper caputred the cozy vibes in the photos below.

From the designer… In the summer of 2020, I received an email regarding a new construction project in the Indianapolis area. Shortly thereafter, that same person texted me hoping to be able to talk as soon as possible. Turns out, she was the sister of one of my neighbors. She had literally just walked past my house earlier that day while telling her sister she needed help with the design of her new home.

The project was a 10,000+ sq. ft. new build nestled in a neighborhood with tree lined streets and a stunning view of a lush green private golf course. I designed and oversaw all the finishes and details of both the interior and exterior of the home. However, there were two challenges with this project, the biggest one was that my family and I moved out of state in the fall of 2020. I quickly had to figure out how to design remotely and make frequent trips each month for selections and walk throughs, all during a pandemic.

The second challenge, which was honestly more of a fun one, my client and her family of six, were coming from a home they had spent many years in. This home had a lot of personality, warmth, and charm and I didn’t want their new home to feel like it was too pristine and lacked the character they were used to. So I had to make sure there was a good balance between the modern style that they adored and some traditional elements. These elements would add depth and a sense of history to each space. Some of the more special features of this project were: the vintage dresser that we turned into a vanity for the powder room; the custom handmade pocket doors that were modeled after vintage ones we liked; and the artisan clay tiles from Morocco that we used in a number of rooms.
