Homeowners, Paul and Michelle, have created a most calm and carefully considered kitchen in their London townhouse with the help of Alexa Jacobs of deVOL Kitchens. Simple shaker cabinets in tranquil earthy green and luminous marble countertops produce a space that honors the history of the home while gently leaning into the future. See how it all came together in the captivating images below.
From the designer… Hiding away in the basement of the most handsome house you have probably ever come across, there is a simple Shaker kitchen that has set our hearts aflutter. This home was featured in our latest TV series ‘For The Love Of Kitchens’ and it has been in our minds ever since. The Mile End road goes through a little area called Stepney in East London, it is such a diverse and exciting place to be. But step inside this grand Georgian townhouse and you are instantly struck by the serenity this home exudes. Paul and Michelle own this property, they purchased it during lockdown and have just completed what can only be described as a truly exquisite renovation.
The colours, the materials, all the long painstaking jobs, and tricky decisions have turned this house into room after room of immaculately curated spaces. We love seeing our cupboards looking so totally at home in this historic house, the kitchen would always have been in the basement and naturally, it feels just right. No walls knocked down, no glass panelling or open spaces, just individual rooms all with a special purpose.
Standard Shaker furniture painted in a bespoke colour, a sort of greeny brown, that suits the room and house so well. Softly translucent marble worktops that bounce pretty light around this moody atmospheric kitchen, and the prettiest Shaker prep table. A vintage baker’s rack completes the kitchen, neatly stacked with hand-thrown pottery collected and treasured by Paul and Michelle.
This room has shown us that sometimes it is a good idea to keep your home as it was intended. Keeping the history alive in these carefully protected houses is of paramount importance and for us, there are only positives from this way of living. We find the space so inspiring and hope you will love it too.
