Tell us about the inception of Jessica Glynn Photography. What did your journey to becoming a photographer look like?
I took my first photography class in high school when I was 14 years old in Old Westbury, New York. The classroom had a darkroom and I was hooked. I was a very shy and quiet kid growing-up, I loved being able to speak through my photography. I knew I wanted to be a photographer so I wrote to the editor of “National Geographic” and asked him what I should study in college. He wrote back and told me to go to a school with a communications school. I went to Boston University. I then studied for my masters degree in Photographic Journalism in London at the University of Westminster. I started shooting architecture and found my calling. I worked at several magazines as an editorial assistant while shooting everything from travel to portraits to architecture. After living around the world in Australia, New Zealand, and England, I moved to Palm Beach, Florida in 2005. I started specializing in interiors and architecture. And the rest is history.
How would you describe your personal photography style and what influences have had the greatest impact in developing said style?
My photography style is to show rooms in their best natural light. I chase the light around homes when I am shooting. I try and use as little artificial lighting as possible. I prefer to take multiple exposures and blend them in Photoshop after the photo shoot. I work on each photo as if it were a single piece of art. I make sure everything looks as polished as possible from the lighting to the colors bouncing off walls, to shadows and highlights.
You have two published books, “Beachside-Windsor Architecture and Design” and “Palm Beach Chic”, what an incredible accomplishment! What are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of photographing a book?
The most rewarding aspect of making a book is receiving the author copy months before the world gets to see it. Seeing a body of work you created immortalized in print for years to come is extremely special. The journey of making a book is a really beautiful process that last around two years. There are many wonderful connections and friendships created along the way. I love hearing and seeing people’s reactions to reading the book. The most challenging part for me is the pressure I put on myself. I will not sleep or let an image out of my hands that I am not entirely happy with.
If photography wasn’t your calling, what profession do you think you’d find yourself in?
I have a passion for health and wellness. Maybe a Functional Medicine Practitioner.
Do you have a mindset that has been powerful in your journey of being a business owner?
I have always said, “I do what I love and I hope it shows”. I am always focused on continuing and growing my work, I never think of the negatives that might hold me back. If there’s a will there’s a way.
Jessica is available for consultations, workshops, speaking events and reviewing portfolios. She loves to get her clients published and is continuously in touch with editors around the world making editorial submissions.
How do you balance your work/life schedule when traveling between the US and Europe for shoots?
I moved to Ireland with my family two years ago. My husband, Gerard Glynn, an Irishman is a builder and farmer. We always planned to move to Ireland at some point to live near the family farm. We wanted our daughter to grow up in Ireland and experience a different way of life from living in Florida. It was hard to balance work/life scheduling at first. But we have found a way to make it work. We travel around school holidays and my family always comes with me for part of each trip. I love that I can keep shooting for my amazing clients in the United States while at the same time discovering and photographing the beauty of Ireland and Europe.
