From the designer… The type of project that both challenges and fulfills me the most is when I can come into a space and not only change the beauty of it, but also change its functionality. When designing this Granite Bay Traditional home, my vision was to create a timeless transitional design that brought both functionality and beauty to my client’s home. My ultimate goal was to transform their home into a timeless and lived-in space, keeping in mind the lifestyle of this busy California family.
For these clients who love to cook and entertain, creating a space that would impress was an absolute priority. The kitchen was not only small in comparison with the rest of the home but also didn’t provide enough storage and practical usable space. By relocating some walls and adding new cabinetry, I was able to design a kitchen that answered the needs of my clients. Higher ceilings allowed for taller upper cabinets, providing the extra storage they were hoping for. Their love for cooking and entertaining informed my choices to include the apron sink and large 60” range – a must for any cooking adventures.
By using classic white cabinets contrasted with a black island, we created a timeless statement moment, while also bringing in comforting warmth with several light stained wood elements. Floating shelves not only contributed to the casual California vibe, adding livability and convenience for the clients, but also added character to the space.
The overall mood of the kitchen was complete with the understated color variation of the backsplash that crawls all the way up to the ceiling to create an impressive sense of height and volume. The hints of black seen in the kitchen are carried throughout the home adding continuity to every space. For the final details, we brought in a Turkish vintage rug that added character and a lived-in feel, and woven rattan stools that brought texture and warmth to the overall space.
The kitchen is truly the heart of the home, and designing a space that exceeds my clients’ dreams is the best part of my job!
