The term vintage is not always equivalent to quality and there are myriad levels of quality within the vintage rug market. So how do you know if you’re getting the real deal? Today we’re getting the scoop from District Loom, led by founder and curator, Heather Cade, who passionately sources vintage rugs for the modern home. When it comes to shopping vintage, District Loom knows their stuff, and they’ve got no shortage of insights to share. Keep scrolling for five quick tips to help you identify the quality and authenticity of the vintage rug you’re buying.
Tip No. 1
Identify the origin and age. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if you’re new to the rug world. If that’s the case, reach out to an experienced rug vendor to help you better understand.
Tip No. 2
Pay attention to color distribution. True antique rugs were only made out of natural vegetable dyes, and the color should be distributed evenly from the base of the till to the top of the tuft.
Tip No. 3
Consider the rug’s materials. 100% wool or wool on a cotton foundation are both all-natural and very resilient.
Tip No. 4
Flip over the back of the rug and it should reveal the backside of the knots without any plastic backing.
Tip No. 5
Look closely at the knot count. The tighter the weave, the more expensive it will be, as it would take longer to make.
