When a perfect pairing crosses our path, we can’t help but stop and stare. Interior designer, Meredith McBrearty, and Ryan Street Architects came together to create this sophisticated, contemporary home that showcases the playful personality of the family within. The gorgeous photos, taken by Douglas Friedman, just may captivate you too.

From the designer, and close friend of the owners, Meredith McBrearty… This warm, contemporary home was a project from the ground up with Ryan Street & Associates for repeat clients in the leafy Greenway Parks neighborhood of Dallas. Having worked With RSA on a large home in Austin, we were once again able to have a great working relationship in order to create a lovely home for our clients. The homeowners are a wonderful young couple with three children who wanted a very clean, contemporary home where they could showcase their impressive art collection. The man of the house spent much of his young childhood in New Orleans, so their art showcases many New Orleans artists such as Jose Maria Cundin and Ida Kohlmeyer.

We commissioned Rob Pluhowski, a well-known furniture maker based in New York to fabricate the integrated walnut bed for the owner’s bedroom (complete with iPhone chargers in the drawers!) and the blackened walnut slab coffee table in the living room.

We were so inspired by Piet Boon’s beautiful interiors that we purchased his barstools for the kitchen, as well as the formal dining table. In the walnut bar on the west end of the dining room, my clients found an amazing “video art” piece when shopping in New Orleans that is set in a 70’s trailer – but the wood of the trailer blends perfectly with the walnut-paneled bar! And did I mention they have a sense of humor with their art? If you look closely at the Cundin “Golem” sculpture in the living room, you’ll find a surprise peeking out of his skirt! The John Riepenhoff “legs” serve as an easel in the foyer and are there to set the tone for what you’ll experience inside – a modern, yet relaxed and sensible home for a family that’s obviously fun.

From Ryan Street, architect (original words and quotes from Veranda, March/April 2021)… When we drove around the Greenway Parks neighborhood, they pointed to examples of pretty pure midcentury architecture, homes that look like Richard Neutra or Rudolph Schindler could have designed them,” says Street. “And so we took that as inspiration—the horizontal lines, very clean, with deep overhangs.” In Street’s two-story, four-bedroom design, those overhangs are lined with warming planks of honey-hued Douglas fir that extend into interior spaces, as do the walls of dry-stack gray Lueders limestone used throughout. “The aesthetic is consistent: clean and simple lines, natural materials utilized in a very sophisticated, modern way,” says the architect.
