Touring a designer’s own home always feels like a treat. It’s a glimpse into their aesthetic, 100% authentic and undiluted. Today’s home tour does just that; Geneva Ness shares her home remodel with us, and with it, her incredible skills and impeccable taste. From the designer… My husband and I purchased this home knowing it would need a full remodel on the interior. It was located in our dream town, had a huge yard and a beautiful exterior, but the interior was outdated, dingy, and had a confusing layout. There were two hallways off the entryway with no clear direction as to which way you should go. There were spare rooms that had no apparent purpose. The home had no clear style, and very few architectural details. As an interior designer, it felt like a total blank slate. I knew immediately that I wanted to give it a contemporary and transitional vibe. I also wanted the interior to complement the chateau-like feel of the exterior.
I started with the entryway, where I wanted to give guests a grand feeling as they opened the front door. We took down a wall and expanded several openings, arching them to soften the transitions and add charm. We changed the purpose of several rooms, making it a better fit for our family. We added paneling to walls and ceilings, wallpapered multiple spaces, removed posts, wrapped beams, and coated the walls to give them a plaster-like appearance. This all helped create interest and texture. I wanted to use as many natural materials as possible so we topped the counters in marble, wrapped the backsplash and hood in zellige tiles, and installed a limestone surround on the fireplace. All the hardware was done in unlacquered brass, which we let patina naturally over time. It was a long process from start to finish, but in the end it turned out beautifully and we couldn’t be happier to call it “home”!
