This home brings warmth to the rugged landscape of Tahoe City, California, balancing modern architecture with richly layered Craftsman-inspired detailing. Designed by Kylene Alexander of Design Shop Interiors and photographed by Stephanie Russo, this home pairs tailored millwork and clean-lined forms with earthy textures and natural materials that echo the surrounding lake and mountain landscape. Every space feels deeply connected to its setting, offering a quieter, more elevated take on mountain living.

From Design Shop Interiors… This project takes its name from the homeowners’ deep love of bluebirds — a bird that holds personal meaning for the client, reminding her of her mother. She named the dwelling ‘The Home of the Bluebird Days’, and from that, Bluebird Mountain House was born.

Custom elements anchor the design with a strong sense of place: a hand-chiseled fireplace crafted from local Tahoe granite, a reclaimed wood mantel sourced from Round Top, and in the primary bath, marble paired with custom wool café curtains made by a local artisan. Plaid appears throughout — a nod to the client’s love of the pattern and a natural expression of the cozy cabin spirit the design fully embraced. Organic materials keep the home authentic to its setting, striking a balance between timeless refinement and rustic warmth.
