The Home Industry's Top Experts & Creatives

The best house remodel is one that honors the needs of the family that inhabits it. That is exactly what Miche Victoria did in this East Sacramento home. She artfully blended the home’s traditional beauty with modern coastal vibes for a home that retains its heirloom heart for their growing family. See how this home was brought into the next generation in the marvelous photos below by Stephanie Russo.

From the designer… We were flattered to be considered for this project, especially after learning about the sweet history behind this local Sacramento family. The home was shared between our client and her parents while growing up. It was the home where they created memories our client reminisces about in the most positive way. Sadly, our client’s mother passed away when she was a teenager, but over the years, the home stayed in the family with our client’s father. Recently, with the addition of a new baby to our client’s own family, her father and she decided to switch homes so that she could continue her life in the home she grew up in. Our client’s mother had great taste and her father kept the home beautiful – it just needed a little facelift and the addition of a primary bathroom – which was quite a transformation.

We worked with Bierce Design Build on the construction and tried to create a casual vibe to the home while still staying true to its traditional beauty. The main design changes we were looking to make to the home were a modernized kitchen and the addition of an island, opening up the foyer and hallway to the family room while adding a beautiful new iron stair railing, and remodeling the existing downstairs full bath to accommodate a laundry room and a powder room.

Our client loves anything Serena & Lily with its inspired coastal vibe, but the home had its own timeless beauty and charm, so we decided that California Traditional would be the appropriate style for the home. It was very important to us to retain most of the home’s original features and with that in mind the hallway arches and interior doors and hardware were kept, the beautiful original parquet floors were refinished, and the original windows were restored by a local Artisan. The furnishings are a mix of beautiful traditional pieces with wicker materials to add to the coastal feel desired by our client. Vintage rugs, antique pieces, and the use of some lovely original pieces passed down from their family were the final touches that make this home special and with so much charm. Our clients fell in love with their home once again (and so did we), and now they have a lovely space for new sweet moments to be made.

In the kitchen, reconfiguring the layout, moving some walls, adding the island and new appliances, made such a transformation to the space and added the right amount of modernization this family needed. The kitchen is filled with natural light and textural elements such as the counter stools and light fixtures, and the traditional white kitchen cabinets and the classic carrara counter tops and backsplash are an easy flow with the home’s style while still keeping the more traditional feel. The new powder room with high wainscoting and grass-cloth wallpaper, cast iron utility style sink, and white penny tile floors are the perfect combo for this small but mighty room in the center of the home.

Our main challenge for this remodel was to add a new primary bathroom within the same square footage of the primary bedroom. We were able to expand the bedroom by capturing some of the hallway area on the second floor and used the once walk-in closet space to create a new, and much desired, primary bathroom. We added the all-white-tiled wet room with a freestanding tub – please peek at the original arched window inside the wet room – we died a little! Beautiful hexagon carrara floors and two custom made white oak vanities, make it for a functional space with incredibly timeless longevity.
