This newly built retreat on Gull Lake, in the heart of Ontario’s cottage country, was designed to feel both contemporary and timeless with a modern exterior and interiors that frame its stunning lakeside views. Brought in early in the architectural phase, Karin Bennett Designs ensured that every detail—from the neutral palette inspired by the rugged Canadian landscape to the thoughtfully curated antiques—contributed to a warm and inviting atmosphere. Captured by photographer Mike Chajecki, this family-friendly getaway balances style and function, offering a relaxed yet refined space for making lasting memories.

From Karin Bennett Designs… Karin Bennett Designs was brought into this project early on in the architectural phase which we prefer yielding the best results as we were able to speak into the floor plans and lighting design early on. The goal throughout the home was to keep the eye drawn to the beautiful lake the cottage sits on. This meant our furniture was low, our colour palette was soft and the home was uncluttered. We kept the colours neutral referencing the quintessential Canadian exterior landscape of coniferous and deciduous trees and granite rock and mixed in some interesting antiques that add a bit of soul to this family cottage.
The most important aspect to this design was to consider this is a family cottage situated amongst other family cottages that have been in the family for decades. Our clients wanted their cottage to feel casual and homey so when they entertained their guests everyone would feel at home. The hardwood and millwork is very durable, our clients didn’t want to fuss about kids running through the house with wet bathing suits and dirty boots depending on the season.

Our favourite feature is the bar adjacent to the kitchen. The design allows for wine and bottle storage as well as a place for food and plates to land on those casual evenings when hosting loved ones. The walk in panty keeps appliances out of sight and offers extra storage for all your kitchen needs.
