Yond Interiors reimagined this classic Federalist residence through a layered, modern lens, using rich, saturated color and tactile materials to create rooms that feel immersive, personal, and quietly expressive. The studio shaped the home’s character through singular palettes that give each space its own depth while maintaining a cohesive rhythm throughout. Photographed by Malissa Mabey, the space reflects a thoughtful balance between traditional and contemporary and offers a compelling look at how color can define a home’s experience.

From Yond Interiors This home is a classic 1920s brick Federalist residence, distinguished not only by its architecture but by its setting. The winding, topography-driven streets in its neighborhood create a quiet, almost storybook quality—something that deeply informed the spirit of the project. From the outset, the goal was to honor that sense of place while thoughtfully evolving the home for modern living.

The renovation itself was comprehensive. A full gut remodel allowed for the restoration of original architectural details while making room for a carefully considered addition that introduced a new primary suite, kitchen, and expansive back living space designed for everyday functionality. The clients approached the project with a clear reverence for the home’s history, investing significantly in restoring original millwork and preserving the integrity of the Federalist style. Our role focused on shaping the final layers of the home—wall finishes throughout, as well as the lighting and furnishings that would ultimately define its character. While the kitchen was designed by deVOL Kitchens, we collaborated through details like the pantry wallpaper to ensure cohesion across spaces.

From a design perspective, the overarching vision was to create a home that felt collected over time—layered, nuanced, and deeply personal—while remaining grounded in the home’s classical architecture. Rather than relying heavily on pattern, we leaned into rich, saturated color and tactile materials to build depth. A key strategy was the use of singular, immersive color palettes within each room. By “washing” spaces in one dominant hue—punctuated occasionally by wallpaper or fireplace accents—we were able to create a quiet backdrop that allows the restored millwork to take center stage. This approach not only highlights craftsmanship but also gives each room a distinct yet harmonious identity and allows us to introduce color strategically.

There were many standout moments throughout the project, but a few feel particularly emblematic of the home’s character. The pantry, for instance, offers a moment of surprise and delight, wrapped in a thoughtfully chosen wallpaper that contrasts with the restraint seen elsewhere. In the front living room, a generously scaled, curved sofa upholstered in aubergine mohair anchors the space—its sculptural form and rich texture capturing the balance between tradition and bold, contemporary expression that defines the project as a whole.

Ultimately, the home tells a story of careful stewardship and creative layering—a collaboration between past and present, architecture and atmosphere, client and designer.
