Set among towering redwoods in the Oakland Hills, this Spanish Revival home by Evgenia Merson Design reflects a thoughtful balance between preservation and everyday livability. Beautifully captured by Jessica Burke, the reimagined interiors open previously compartmentalized entertaining spaces into a warm, light-filled great room while drawing inspiration from the surrounding coastal landscape and mature redwood canopy.
From Evgenia Merson Design… This gorgeous Spanish Revival home is located in the Oakland Hills, nestled among redwood trees. It was nearly destroyed in the 1991 East Bay Hills Fire that consumed thousands of homes, but fortunately this home survived. My clients have a deep appreciation for the history and spirit of the home, as well as its charming architectural details. However, at the time they purchased the house, it was in need of some updates, and the kitchen and entertaining areas were divided into small, compartmentalized rooms that were not ideal for hosting.
Our goal was to open up the floor plan and create a logical flow while still preserving the Spanish Revival features and charm. We were able to reconfigure the layout to create a great room where the family can dine and cook together and comfortably host gatherings both large and small.
Our materials and color inspiration are derived from the home’s surroundings, redwood trees, San Francisco Bay, and the California coastal landscape. We were able to harness beautiful natural lighting in every room of the house and balance elements of dark wood with earthy tones that bring layered warmth.
