What began as a dream of returning home upon retirement evolved into a serene, stylish escape crafted by Lotta Coffey Design. With photography by Thibault Cartier, this Glen Ellen residence channels the ease of California living through thoughtful interiors that feel both effortless and intentional. Natural materials, custom furnishings, and a calming palette reflect the client’s desire for a space that nurtures connection and quiet joy, both in the present and for the years to come.

From Lotta Coffey Design… This modern farmhouse, in the middle of Sonoma Wine Country, was designed for a California-born New Yorker, looking to return to her roots and create a place for her family to relax and unwind. The client and her husband had talked about California for many years, as the place where they wanted to retire. But when they found this place in downtown Glen Ellen, they knew they couldn’t wait, and jumped on the opportunity.
The design brief consisted of three words only: clean, comfortable, cozy. With this in mind, we chose a color palette of blues, whites, and burnt orange, inspired by the hills and valleys surrounding the house. We designed custom furniture to make sure functional needs and aesthetic preferences were met. An emphasis on indoor-outdoor living and natural, long-lasting materials allows our client to spend time with family and friends, and just be.
