When re-designing the kitchen of this classic 1930’s single-family home, Shiny Shed Collective aimed to preserve the home’s character and Spanish style influences while enhancing its practicality and aesthetics. By including clay accent tiles and getting creative with the design elements like hidden spice racks, they were able to tailor this quintessential Outer Sunset home to their clients’ everyday needs. SEN Creative captured the incredible transformation below.
From the designer… Our clients have lived in the house over six years with their two adorable daughters and had previously made updates to the bottom floor of the house prior to COVID. They came to us to help reimagine their existing kitchen, keeping the current square footage, and adjusting the space to work harder for their family and their needs. While reconfiguring the kitchen, we were faced with the challenge of optimizing the available space without removing the charming central patio in the home. The patio is a classic feature in Outer Sunset houses of its time and is a unique architectural element that we wanted to keep intact. We opened up the existing space by removing the pony walls and raising the ceiling. We also brought in a much larger skylight to help brighten the room.
We made sure to include some material choices that pay homage to the Spanish style of the home, including unglazed octagon terracotta clay tiles behind the stove. We also introduced an arched doorway leading from the kitchen to the dining room, mimicking the arches used in the rest of the home. To make the space functional, we got creative with the design and included aspects like an appliance garage tailored to the client’s everyday appliances, hidden spice racks, and a stepping stool stored in a thin cabinet to the right of the sink.
