A hexagonal floor plan is something that few of us have had to contend with, but Christina Kim Interior Design made it seem like a walk on the beach. She carefully chose pieces that look great from all directions while taking in 360 views of coastal shores. See how this bright New Jersey home came together in the beautiful photos below captured by Raquel Langworthy.
From the designer… We started this project in the beginning of 2021 and it took a little over a year. The home hadn’t been updated in a while and the kitchen was an absolute gut, we took it down to the studs. Our clients looked to us to create a clean, warm modern beach house that reflected the beautiful surroundings. The architecture created a challenge because of its unique shape, hexagonal, and there were things that we just had to work around as not all the spaces were being renovated. I can confirm that hexagonal kitchens are not straight forward! It was difficult to create a focal point which is why we selected a backsplash with pattern and color to ground the space. We designed a custom marble hood so as not to distract from that focal point but to add a layer of luxe while keeping it soft.
I think of the main living room as clean and ethereal. Like many homes on the ocean, this home had a reverse living floor plan where the main floor is the second floor which means you are higher up and the sky figures into your view just as much as the ocean. Even on a cloudy day, it feels like you’re in a landscape painting. We wanted this room to feel just as expansive as the ocean in front of it.
In terms of furnishings, a hexagonal room forces you to choose pieces that can float in a room and be lovely on all sides, especially the back. There is not a single piece of furniture up against the wall in these rooms. We worked from a light neutral base of furniture and layered in dusty rose and smoky blue accents. The seating is low profile and loungy as the clients envisioned entertaining late into the evening and filling the room with friends and music. The handblown glass chandelier and soft, pale tone-on-tone rug were meant to add to the ethereal quality of the space.
