The Home Industry's Top Experts & Creatives

There are plenty of quick and easy ways to refresh your home each season, but one of the easiest (and most fun!) is layering in fresh, new throw pillows. The part that might not feel so easy though, is coming up with the perfect pillow pairings. With a sea of patterns, colors, textures and sizes to choose from, you might feel a bit cross-eyed in the process of selecting your winning combo. So, to put your pillow pressures at ease, we’ve created a handy little go-to guide in partnership with our friends at Serena & Lily, who happen to have some incredibly beautiful selections this season. Take a peek below for the tips and some of our favorite pillow combos for winter.

Tip No. 1: Curate Your Color Combo

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to pillow color combos. Sticking to a similar color palette helps tremendously and is one of our favorite ways to pair up pillows, but getting eclectic with your colors can also make for a gorgeous overall look! The keys to success are paying equal attention to the overall scene and your intimate vignette. In other words, make sure that your color scheme works well with the entire look of the room and doesn’t compete with any other design elements, and also, that your pillow colors don’t compete with each other.

Tip No. 2: Select a Statement Pillow

Start with a statement pillow—think playful and organic. This is the pillow with the most personality of the bunch. This pattern is usually an intricate, floral or freeform design and it might provide the most contrast.

Tip No. 3: Layer in the Linear

Once you have your statement pillow, it’s time to layer in those lines to keep things balanced. Think geometric shapes, stripes, plaid, grids, etc. The Blakely Plaid pillow is so cozy for these chilly winter months.

Tip No. 4: Let’s Talk Texture

Speaking of texture… this is one of the best ways to bring life to your pillow combos, especially during the winter months! Aim to incorporate texture with at least one of your pillows. Our favorite this season is the beautifully embroidered Leighton Pillow shown above.

Tip No. 5: Be Mindful of Scale

Scale doesn’t only refer to the size of the pillows you’re mixing and matching, but also the patterns or designs on your pillows. Avoid a busy, cluttered look by aiming for an equal balance of large and small scale patterns.

With those tips, you’re on the road to pillow pairing success! We can’t wait to see how you mix and match your pillows. Share with us by tagging your photos #howihaven on Instagram.
