Lisa, of LHK Interiors, has recently embarked on a career journey that began to take shape in tandem with her own kitchen remodel. In today’s petite interview, we learn how her design business grew organically and why she wakes up every day eager to continue. Check out some of her work and learn how she sets up each day for success below!

Share a bit about your desire to become an interior designer and the journey that got you to where you are today.

I have always been interested in design and would accessorize the homes we lived in for years. My husband would always make fun of me that I would bring home my “trinkets” from my shopping excursions. At the beginning of Covid we moved out of our home to start our remodel. I created an Instagram account and began to share the process and reveals. My account grew pretty quickly and my business organically grew from followers contacting me to help design their homes. Now I can’t imagine doing anything else.

What is the number one question you are asked by clients? And how do you answer it?

How do I make my home look cohesive? We begin with selecting a color palette and using repetition throughout the home. Whether that be repeating the same materials, paint colors, finishes, shapes and textures throughout the home to create a cohesive look. Nothing too matchy-matchy, but just enough where everything feels cohesive.

This kitchen is the first space I ever completed for a client. Since they live quite a distance away from me, we did everything virtually and I wasn’t on site during the construction process. The first time I’d seen the kitchen completed is when we shot these photos and I gasped when I walked in. I felt so proud and it was so gratifying.

We’re curious to know, which aspect of interior design keeps you coming back for more?

I love being creative and each home has a different story to tell. It’s so gratifying seeing clients’ reactions when you design something they could have never imagined or seen the possibility for their home. It just brings me so much joy that I can do that for someone.

What are a few things you do to set the tone before you begin a busy day at LHK Interiors?

I must start with a to-do list or I can get overwhelmed and sidetracked since there are so many moving parts to running a business and working on design projects. When I can check things off a list it helps me to stay grounded and focused. Plus who doesn’t love to check tasks off a list?! You feel like you’re being so effective and efficient with your time.

We’ve all become a little more intimate with our own dwellings over the past couple of years. What does a well-lived home mean to you?

For me, a well-lived home is feeling like your home is “finished.” Living in a home you feel is a reflection of who you are. I think so many people live in a house with no art on the walls and mismatched furniture they’ve collected over the years with the intention of changing it and inevitably never do. Create a home you’re proud of and really tells the story of who you are and somewhere you love to retreat to after a long chaotic day.
