The Home Industry's Top Experts & Creatives

In their renovation of a 1915 home, Plaster & Patina Interior Design prioritized preserving its original charm while seamlessly integrating modern elements. Taking cues from the home’s architecture they sourced unique hand-painted floor tiles and vintage-inspired furnishings to craft a space where old-world elegance harmonizes with contemporary bespoke design.

From the designer… With the home being originally built in 1915, the flow was in need of some help. In vintage homes, kitchens were created to suit a different use, often hidden in the back of the home with swinging doors to cover their modest and purely functional aesthetic. It is our belief as a company that we take our cues from the original architecture of the home and renovate respectfully and cohesively. With that, we knew we wanted to do our best to keep some of the original aspects when re-imagining the space.

We added French doors to the outside with a large porch space for al fresco dining and kept a good portion of the original butler’s pantry. The freestanding washer and dryer units that were seen by the kitchen were moved upstairs to create an eat-in nook space adjoining the kitchen. With the space being on the smaller side, we knew we wanted to pack a punch with personality, so we dreamed up a custom walnut island with a vintage furnishings flair, sourced gorgeous hand-painted Moroccan tiles for the floor, and paired it with subtle shaker style cabinetry. The pairing of old and new was something that was important to us throughout the space.
