You’ve shared that a photo of Mohammad Ali sparked your interest in photography as a young child. When did your focus shift from people to interiors?

I never really shifted. I added. I still do a lot of work with people, but I am best known for interiors, or really anything environmental. But I have always had a love for design and interiors.

What advice would you give someone who is breaking into interior photography today?

Well, the photography market has become increasingly difficult in all areas. But for those interested in design and interiors, it’s definitely an avenue to explore. Practice, Practice, Practice! And be aware of how clients and the market are using interior imagery and the styles that resonate with you, and work in that direction. Making relationships with interior designers is a good way to get access to properties to shoot and build up imagery. But I think one important aspect all photographers or wanna-be’s need to understand and work on – is how to run a business.

As a self-proclaimed fount of energy, you arrive on shoot day with the ability to charge a room with excitement. Where do you direct that spark on shoot day?

I think it’s important to keep energy levels high and attitudes positive. Most of our shoots involve a team of players (designers, homeowners, stylists, assistants, crew, and clients) – I am the point of contact, and the one who is hired, and I generally bring my crew with me. I strive to always keep things upbeat and with a sense of humor and fun as well. When people are having fun, being happy, fed well, and have plenty of coffee, it makes everyone produce to the highest level. Also, in terms of the images… I guess I always say “Give it a slice of life.” Everyone knows what a room or space looks like, but through photography and styling and lighting, etc – I strive to make an image that tells someone “how it feels.”

The are lots of unknowns in the world of AI – and so much more is yet to be discovered –  how do you think you might use this tool in your business in the next few years?

The key word in your question is “tool.” AI is another tool that is new and exciting to some and scary to others. I honestly haven’t formed a real opinion yet on how I feel about it. But I do know, that in terms of architecture and design, the final product still needs to be REAL, and will still need to be photographed. Everyone was weary of digital photography, and then it found its place as a tool, among all the tools we have as photographers and image makers.

Do you have a mantra or mindset that has been powerful in your journey of being a business owner?

It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. You will get knocked down, but how you get up and keep going and keep re-inventing yourself is how you need to “play the game”

What passions do you pursue when you’re not behind the lens?

TRAVEL, TRAVEL, TRAVEL. Especially with my husband Nick – who is also my “muse” for my personal fine artwork, and especially the series “Life with Nick”. When not traveling, home life is where it’s at with our two wonderful four legged rescue pups, River & Storm.
