Perched in the scenic mountains of Woodstock, Vermont, this retreat offers sweeping views of the neighboring national forest and a cozy escape for family connection. Elliott | Meyers Design transformed the timber-frame home by blending rustic warmth with modern style and preserving original elements like reclaimed barnboard floors and stone fireplaces. Captured beautifully by Dwelling Photography, the result is a warm, inviting getaway, perfect for making lasting family memories.
From the designer… Our Prosper Ridge project was born out of our client’s desire to have a retreat from their New York City home that allowed them to reconnect both as a family and with their natural surroundings. They have always had an affinity for Vermont and their dream was to one day own a home nestled among it’s rolling green mountains – enter all 34+ acres of Prosper Ridge.
The natural surroundings were well established around the home, originally built in 2005 in a timber frame style, with abounding views and a national park bordering the property line. The interior of the home, however, left much to be desired. We knew going into the project that we wanted to preserve the reclaimed barnboard floors, hand hewn oak post and beam details and the stone fireplaces. Preserving much of the original structure and refinishing existing square footage really gets down to the ethos of what we believe here at Elliott | Meyers Design; if extra care and consideration is taken, not everything needs to be torn down and started from scratch to achieve the look and feel that you want.
Much of the house was dark and unwelcoming and the lower level was completely unfinished leaving a lot of underutilized square footage. The renovations included full remodels to all of the bathrooms, bedrooms, living room, mudroom, office and extensive finishing of the basement to include a bunk room, bathroom, family room, gym, wine room and laundry room. Another phase of the project is scheduled to start next year to renovate the kitchen and create an addition for a new primary suite.
One of the biggest challenges of this project was working against the elements of Vermont’s unforgiving winter coupled with an incredibly steep driveway with one particularly arduous hairpin turn. This caused several delays for both the workers, not able to access the home after storms, and for deliveries that never made it up the driveway and to the house. Early one spring after much of the snow had melted we actually found a very sizable area rug, still in it’s packaging, that we had been trying to track down for weeks that had been buried in a snowbank.
This project was a true collaboration with our clients who have a keen eye for style and a really clear sense of their likes and dislikes. We are incredibly proud of this project, beyond just the finishes and design, but in the way that it makes you feel when you enter it. This home has served as a sanctuary for our clients and is a home that their young family can grow into and enjoy for years to come.
