Today, we’re getting a glimpse into a charming Bath townhouse, featuring a beautifully simple deVOL kitchen that perfectly complements its historic surroundings. With its calm ambiance, stunning natural light filtering through the original Georgian glass, and a sense of timeless serenity, this space unveils the often-overlooked beauty of basement spaces. The design, created in collaboration with the talented Banjo Beale, preserves the character and authenticity of the house, blending classic style with subtle modern touches. It’s a perfect example of how history and functionality can come together in a way that feels both enduring and fresh.
From deVOL Kitchens… We are very excited to allow you a peek into the basement of this wonderful Bath townhouse, with its simple Classic English deVOL kitchen. The room is beautifully calm, and the light is spectacular coming through the original wavy Georgian glass panes. There is a secretive beauty about basement rooms that you just don’t find anywhere else. Even in the centre of this bustling city, there is a sense of peace in these old houses with their thick honey-coloured stone walls and secrets.
Our design team worked alongside the fabulous Banjo Beale to create the simplest, most authentic kitchen for his clients. We are so impressed with how Banjo has meticulously preserved the original character of the room. The decision to leave the chippy woodwork, paneling, doors, and cupboards in their original state was so right, it has saved the history and character of the house, making it feel like a time capsule. Many people would have had an uncontrollable urge to strip and repaint everything, making it feel clean and new, but when you have so much stone and so many features in the room, it would be such a shame to start again.
Our Classic cupboards are designed for these kinds of rooms, the Georgian detailing and their sturdy simplicity feel right at home in a house like this. The cupboards are painted in our Printer’s Black shade and topped with bespoke copper worktops, these subdued and soft tones sit very comfortably alongside the old stone floors and fireplace. A little modernity and function were necessary, the Lacanche cooker, deVOL brass rails, and deVOL Heirloom wall lighting give practicality but also make the room feel fresh and new and ready for a busy family to enjoy.
When we opened our showroom in Bath, we hoped for opportunities to design and photograph kitchens like this, these houses are so right for our Classic furniture and the finished rooms always have a charm and elegance that is special to Bath.
