In the heart of Georgetown’s historic district, Whitney Walker of Farrington Lane and her clients united to update their Folk Victorian kitchen. By incorporating innovative design with antique accents and character-filled details she brought their casual style and collector’s ethos to the foreground in this remarkable renovation. See how it all came together in the light-dappled photos below, taken by Jeff Jones.

From the designer… These clients came to us for our mutual love of preservation and older homes. Their Folk Victorian home is located in a historic district in Georgetown where you can find beautiful period structures. The two areas they were looking to improve were the kitchen/dining room, and their primary bathroom.

The kitchen was not original to the home and was previously a porch that had been enclosed at an earlier date. As such, we decided to forgo a window in place of a proper range hood and range placement, and enlarged the window over the sink to include a custom transom. It was important to our clients to incorporate natural light, use natural materials, and have more storage and functional cooking and baking stations, so we moved the range to an exterior wall, and lowered the bar that backed up to the dining room to enlarge a baking area surface. We also extended the vertical height of the cabinets and added the reclaimed beams for interest.

Because our client was passionate about using original materials as much as possible, she actually deconstructed the window that we covered up pane by pane and brought the original wavy glass panes to the window restoration company to be used in the new window that was handmade. I was so impressed! Shortly after our project, she also stripped the decades of paint off of her front door and stained it herself. For our built in pantry doors, I looked to the pattern on the front door for inspiration to design the cutouts.

The main challenge with the primary bathroom was that it did not have any natural light. The first thing I wanted to do was to add a skylight (that could not be viewed from the street), and bring in pattern on the walls and floor. We were very excited about the value pricepoint of the custom patterned floor by Daltile. We brought in some age with antique mirrors and unlacquered brass to give the new remodel some deeper roots.

It was a fun challenge working with clients who came with so much to the table, and working in harmony toward the finished product. They have a kindred collector’s spirit!
